I also recommend you change the heater valve with the non-cheap variety. Granted, the one in my '88 is the cheaper, aftermarket variety and it hasn't catastrophically failed yet, but it is also very vague in temperature selection and I've heard far too many bad recommendations involving these aftermarket valves failing at short intervals.
It's a ball-end hex tool ("Allen Wrench") that you need. 4 mm if I recall correctly. I didn't pull the driver's seat, I just laid down on the floor- I cleaned the floormat first, even though a good thermoplastic floormat will keep you from spilling a little coolant on your carpet.
Operations-wise, it's not that difficult. Don't forget to open the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing when you refill your coolant.
