Just to clarify: Is it the actual gear shift lever (with the ball on top) that we are talking about or the actual shift rod that runs between the shift console and the transmission?
If you talking about the gear shift lever then yes . . . you remove the three screws that hold the lever in place and pull up. No need to even pull up the carpet.
If you are talking about the shift rod then it is a bit more complicated. You will need to pull up the carpets and remove the plastic center console. Then you will need either the special tool to remove the three-sided nuts holding the shift box to the floor or a punch and a hammer to get those nuts moving. You will also need to get under the car to undo the clamp connecting the shift rod to the rod protruding from the transmission. Clearance is a bit tight under there (next to the steering rack) and the bolts can be corroded (particularly in buffalo). After you do this the whole shift box and shift rod will lift out in one piece (with the shift lever attached).
I'm a little mystified though . . . how were you able to determine that you have a broken weld (in either the shift lever of the shift rod)if you have not already dissassembled these items on your own car? Also, within the range of years you describe (85-90) i seem to recall that the shifter mechanism changed from an externally centered to internally centered (within the transmission). Others should feel free to correct me on this.
