My sister had a 900 missing one of the redundant belts. I told her to get a second belt on there, or she'd be in deep trouble if the remaining belt failed. Sure enough it failed, she drove about 10 miles with it gone. This powers the water pump. After that, the engine was a little noisier than usual , but worked OK after the belts and vaporized cooolant was replaced.
She also had let it run down on oil too - it took better than 3 quarts to get it back to full. Engine was noisier but ran fine after that. Amazingly tough engine.
You didn't describe the noise you heard, but it could be a belt coming off or slipping, harmonic balancer pulley, or anything. You should get a flashlight or droplight and inspect at the rear of the engine for any pulleys without belts, or belts missing or piece of belts.
It would not be wise to drive it until either you figure out what broke or had a car person look at it. Inspecting belts and pumps isn't really a Saab specific task, so any average or above average mechanic should be sufficient.
