The fuel tank does not need to be removed. You access the pump canister through the back. If its a 3 door its under the ply wood in the back. After removing this you will see 2 circular plastic caps. The pump is the larger one, the smaller is the fuel sender. You will need to use a hammer and a screwdriver like object to unscrew this.
Someone else, or your mechanic, can give a more exact explanation of how to dianose the bad pump. It involves putting a volt meter up to the pump to read the power.
The fuel pump, if you buy the whole assembly, can be very expensive. It is a nice clean DIY if you do it this way. However I replaced just the pump in about less than 2 hours and it only cost $75. This was the biggest dollar saving job I ever did to my C900T. I was quoted over $900 and they thought they had me over a barrel because the car was undrivable. If you just replace the pump as I did you need to be careful with the gaskets. I found my ground wires were fried and had to remake these...and this is ultimately why the fuel pump failed.
Sorry this is such a long message.
Hope this helps.
