Well, I've put out a couple posts the last few days in advance of picking up my new (well my sons) 1986 Saab 16V 900T.
The car is very clean overall, and looks great. I bought it in a non running state for $200....... The owner said she had an intermittent stalling problem (probably vaccum leak), and in trying to fix it, the car quit running completely. She said the trans and all else worked without issue (incuding turbo). She also bought the car for $1950 in February of this year, installed new tires, front rotors pads and calipers, new Battery, and from the looks of it a new alternator as well..... Said all was well untill it started acting up.
So...... I tow the car to my house today, recharged the battery and tried to start it again. I had already put two bottles of drygas and 5 gallons of fresh fuel, so after a few hours of charging, (While waiting, we vaccumed the interior and looked the fluids over, checked accessories, ALL looked great & worked!) I try to start it again, and it kicks a bit at first, but will not start. My gut/ear told me NO spark. I thought maybe fuel pump, as this one is SUPER quiet, but the plugs were soaked when I pulled them. :-)
So, I went out and bought a new cap & rotor from dealer (gotta use saab/bosch for this, but NEVER again at the dealer..... $36.00) I changed those out, both were crapped out, the rotor was very worn, and cracked and looked bad as did the cap. The owner said that her brother had changed plugs and wires in an attempt to FIX, so off the cover came and.... WALLAH! He has the wires running in direct order 1 2 3 4, and clockwise to boot, with #1 where 3 should be........... PLUS two of the plugs were cracked down the body... So, off to Autozone (which had autolites only......) New plugs, in right order and KICKED RIGHT OVER! Praise the LORD! & Pass the bargain plate........ I will order and put in NGK's soon and keep the autolites as backups.
I also did a compression check, comes out 180, 150, 170, 160. How do these sound??? I've never checked a 16V before. Seemed good to me. Diddnt do a wet test. Just dry.
Anyhow, after letting it warm up a bit, I note that the valves clatter quite a bit. Were pretty loud at startup, and stayed loud. I thought these were Hydraulic??? The valve clatter is much louder than my 1982 8V. But I dont know what oil is in the car, and it is some cheapo filter...... Will put in a 10-40 semi synthetic next week. Do the cam oil feeders clog up on this car? I have to look at the manual to see the oil flow. Took the car for a quick ride, transmission shifs well, engages quickly and easily, shifts smartly. Sway bar bushings have to be changed in front, as they knock (car has front and rear bars).
The engine does have a vaccum leak somewhere, or possibly something wrong in the ignition, as it will stall unpredictibly when idling, but not driving. I think it may be a crank sensor, or the hall sending unit, as the tach gets jumpy and it doesnt ast like a vaccum leak before it stalls. BUT I will go over the whole thing, test, check, clean, and replace all vaccum lines, and al sensors, AIC, etc. etc.. Will also take off clean all intake and turbo plumbing. (wastegate actuator moves and APC valve clicks). The tab that holds the plug for the hall unit to the distributor is broken and it is held in place with a zip tie, so I wonder...... POWER is really bad too. The turbo spools up nicely, and it shows normal boost, but I think it is running with the base boost (or NO boost). I hear it spool up, nice wine, what I expect, but no pop off. But I have to go over it all. It FEELS like the cat is plugged up, and the donut where the down pipe and turbo meet is shot and leaks a bit. This may also be an issue too.
Anyhow, the short end of this long tale is that I got an awesome deal, but I do feel a little guilty.............. BUT... MY SON LOVES THE CAR..... ANd seeing him smile as it kicked over, watching him vaccum the car spotless......... Windex the interior and talk about how he wants to mod it really makes me happy.
I know I hit about 5 topics in this post, so if you read it and have an idea, let me know what you think. THANKS!
Hey Nick T, if your reading this, I'm back in a C-900!
