Yea '86 was one of the best 900 turbos for sure (and when you get it running right your son may feel no need for mods). No crank angle sensor on an '86 as it's in the dist. That Hall effect connector is fragile and troublesome but lots of them have zip-ties by now. You can no longer get the connector part that's on the dist. so handle it carefully. When I get a car like this I change the oil filter and put in Castrol 10/40 and then do it again after about 500 miles 'cause you don't get it all with one change (cooler). All 16 valves have hydraulic lifters and they can get bound up and noisy. When you do that first oil change put in a quart of "Marvel Mystery Oil". That stuff works pretty well for loosening up noisy lifters. Until '88 the heads had little steel tubes and plastic elbows for oiling the cams and lifters and the elbows can crack and leak. They have little tiny o'rings on them too which can split. Buy a new set of elbows and install them for effective cam oiling. If you lack full boost you can distinguish between lost pressure (due to a split induction tube or boot) and an APC problem by just clamping or disconnecting the small hose from the APC solenoid to the wastgate. (This assumes that your wastegate isn't stuck open). If it boosts like crazy then troubleshoot the APC system. No boost=induction leak. Have Fun.
