My guess is that you're talking about at least 1 1/2 hours. I drove about 40 minutes once on a bad VR, and got away with it. That would be twice my previous best.
The downside is that when the car dies, it dies. No restart, and it could happen almost anywhere. It's up to you, but I don't think it'll make it.
What's more, you really don't know the state of the battery. The system may not have been charging before the light came on.
I haven't looked at the back of a 900 alternator in a while, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove it. The VR is that diamond shaped device on the back, held on with two screws. You should be able to swap it with a screwdriver and an open end wrench in short order. (And if you can't someone will tell me). The screwdriver is for the screws; you need a wrench to remove the battery ground clamp. It isn't absolutely necessary, but any time you work around the alternator, it's a good idea.
