Trunk/Convertible molding Strip - Trunk won't open

On my 91 900 convertible, the black metal molding strip just above the trunk is raised up, but the screws are still tight. Seems like one of the previous owners replaced the top and didn't put this strip back on correctly on the passenger's side. It's the black metal molding strip with 12 screws that covers across the entire back edge of the convertible top fabric, just below the window and above trunk.
It's raised up so that when I open the trunk, the passenger side of the trunk is rubbing against the moding. It's now to the point where if I force the trunk open, it won't slide past the molding anymore, and will permanently chip the paint, or bend the molding.
Finally the question, If I remove the 12 screws from this moding strip that appears to hold down the back edge of the top, will it make it difficult to re-attach through the top's fabric? What are the screws securing into underneath? Would this be easier with the top partially raised up?
Thanks for everyone's input...
