I'm into uncharted territory with my '88 (200k finally) and I've never had an A-arm go on me, but still, I inspect them. I've also run ball joints well past worn out, but the pre-loaded design of the front suspension keeps them from popping apart, at least so far. I think the only issue you'll have with metal fatigue should be if the car was repeatedly subjected to very large bumps at speed, for example if you bought your car from someone who didn't look at the road because all they did was follow the tail lights of the person in front of them. Any setup like that which is subjected to vibration, bumps and jolts is theoretically prone to fail with fatigue, but that's a question of time versus heat treating.
It's a nice setup- the lower spring seat (the cup in the Macpherson strut) collected salt and rusted out until the spring pushed through to rub on the tire, but that was a thirteen year old brick. I suppose that's your alternative.
I used to work at a dealership, and it's reassuring to see that the A-arms on my 900 (2750 pounds) are the same size and thickness as those on a brand new XC90 (4000 pounds.)
