There was a run of bad welds on the arms. My wifes 1987 900S had the problem. when it let go she was backing up in the parking lot. at first she thought she had had a flat, the left side just "went down". getting out she immediately realized that the tire was ok, but the fender well was sitting on it! So it was towed, by the front using the tow attachments, to the dealer. I got to look at the offending A arm. It was very obvious that the weld had not been down properly. You could see the bright portion that finally let go, it was not welded completely across the joint. It almost looked like a tack had been done to hold everything in place and they didn't get back to do the complete weld at that point. We are in California so rust didn't enter into the equation.

We still have the car, has 359,000 miles on it now. Internal work on the engine, blown head gasket after overheat. resurfaced the head and put exhaust valves in (per suggestion of the machine shop), replaced the 5 speed with a factory rebuild at about 200k, on the third (really!) clutch now. also put in another steering rack as we were getting called the exxon valdez...

I just did the wheel bearings, upper and lower a arms, and put new rotors and pads all around, and tires. should be good until at least 400K
