Thanks for the suggestions.
Oops! Posted before with no name. Here it is again:
I checked for fluid leaks and couldn't find any. I looked in the engine for the P.S. belt (and resisted the temptation to reach in :-) ), but wasn't sure where it would be. Everything that looked like a belt was turning, though. I tried to look at the Ujoint, but had difficulty pulling up the rubber boot. Should it be difficult? I wasn't pulling as hard as I could because I didn't want to break something and thought I might be doing it wrong. I could make out a little orange c-ring underneath that was pretty grimy, should it be so dirty?
Meanwhile, I've continued driving the car. It has gone from the occasional crackle to a fairly constant squeaking noise when I turn the wheel. Is it still okay for me to keep on driving it?
