There is a plastic trim ring over the carpet that you pull up on and then pull like hell on the rubber boot. Pry it off with a screwdriver if you need more leverage. When reinstalling the boot, make sure the lip is not distorted or you will get water leaks. It's easy to bend the lip straight with a pliers, if the screwdriver distorts the edge.
If your fluid level is OK, the pump is probably OK. When a rack goes the steering almost skips or is easy one way and hard the other.
Ujoints almost always get stiff in Winter. Salt and water get in there and lock up the joint. If just stiff, the heat form the dryer will loosen it up. But I still don't like the cracking. When I experienced that noise on my 85 900, a couple of needle bearings had disintegrated and jammed the joint. When you get the boot off, if the joint moves up and down when you try to turn the wheel, the Ujoint is jammed with a bad needle and the hair dryer trick won't help.
