Take the butt end of a hammer handle and tap on the alternator case while car is running and someone is sitting inside. If it's worn brushes, the shock will sometimes make them make contact again (or break contact). So if the alternator light is on but then goes off, or off but then comes on, or starts flickering, my guess then would be worn brushes. If it does nothing it could still be worn brushes, which is the next cheapest thing next to a ground wire and one of the most likely things that could be wrong.
You can buy JUST brushes if your're good at soldering, or a voltage regulator, which comes with brushes attached, and install without removing alternator from the car, with an extra-long screwdriver. Two screws. I can't remember if plain screw, phillips, or even allen head or torx. Think it varies. Put a little oil on the threads and maybe even new screws when you put the new one in.
