Your engine will most decidedly NOT be harmed by banging off the rev limiter. Do it all day if you want. Here's how it works:
You're gunning for the checkered flag in your own personal Indy 500 (even though you're really just after a gallon of milk and loaf of bread at the 7-11 down the road). As you get up into the high end of the revs, your adrenaline coursing through your veins, eyes buggin' out, you demand just a little more from your machine. So down to the floor goes the pedal and up goes the tach - right to 6250.
Well, fun's over now, because your fuel computer puts the kabosh on your injectors, and right quick, too - instantly, basically. There is no leaning out, no gradually diminished fueling. As soon as the rev limiter hits, the injection of fuel STOPS: there is no lean condition to melt pistons because there is NO FUEL to be burned -- the spark plugs might be firin' but there ain't nothin' to burn 'cept air. Air? Yes, plain old air. When that super-tuned turbocharged engine of yours ain't burnin' fuel because you're bangin' on the rev limiter, it's just passing air right through and out yer tailpipe as you dream of hot umbrella girls and victory while the staccato bap-bap-bap sound of your rev limiter pounds your ears.
Which is good, because you're just about at the finish line with no more gears to grab and milk and bread also weighing heavy on your mind.
Um, in other words, there is nothing harmful from banging off your rev limiter. In a given cylinder, the final combustion event before the injectors are shut down will involve a proper volume of fuel.
