You wrote: The dash is cracked and the seats are worn, but it's still our primary car and in otherwise great shape.I'd love to get it upgraded with a fresh powertrain, water/oil cooled turbo and new brakes and suspension.

I'd say do the things that 1) makes you feel it's newer/happiest 2) do them as you can find the bargins, you'll feel great about this part too.

My wifes 87 has original calipers, just rebuilt them with gasket kits. I would not change the brakes, just renew them. New rotors if yours are warped, new pads to match.

Dash? I've been using dash pads on some of mine. Looks great, and I don't worry about it sitting in the sun because it's very inexpensive.

water/oil cooled turbo, if you really want to do this (you don't have to but can) wait until you find a great donor car and get all of the pieces. you can check the turbo out, perhaps put the rebuild kit in, all the while your car is still available until the weekend you do the deed...

New Upper and lower Ball joints and other misc suspension stuff will make you smile, consider new shocks too.

Do a good full service tune up. Plugs, rotor, cap, airfilter, wires, and change oil and filter. Lastely consider changing the oil in the 5 speed with some 10w-30 Mobil-1

How is the paint? if in good condition consider do a full on detail, clay bar, polish, wax, sealer. We did this to my nephews old beater Volvo wagon (just because), people at his work thought he had gotten a new paint job. Should have seen the smile on his face as he told me!!!

Do you garage your car? I suspect you might to keep it this long and be happy with it. Staying in a garage overnight doubles or triples the lifetime of the car (more if you are in the rust or snow belt).

Get one of those california whatever brushes that you can brush off the dust, they are really cool. Consider a lightweight car cover for sunny days parked in the sun or under a tree... cheap insurance and keeps the car *clean*, cooler too...

We have 360,000 on the wifes 1987 900S 4 door 5 speed. It needs a headliner, and if we do that then I will get it painted. mechanicals are either great or already done. Did the seat bottom spring kits, like a new car, especially with new mats! look in my phto gallery, it's the Rose Quartz one...
