Chris, if you aren't really that huge of an audiophile, utilizing the stock 4" cut outs in the dash are perfect. Get a nicer speaker with built in tweeter. For the rear, get a nice set of speakers to go in the back (these speakers will produce most of the bass because of their larger size). A good head unit makes all the difference in the world; you should be looking at head uints around 50 watts or more a channel.
However, I went for a more drastic makeover on my SPG. I built custom speaker and tweeter enclosures in both the passenger and driver doors to house a nice Boston Acoustic component system (best and most accurate sound reproduction). I also built a custom sub box in the spare tire well to fit an 8" competition Audiobahn sub. I also hid all the amps, crossovers, and capacitor down there so I could still have a trunk that i could use. Let me know if you have any questions!
