there is no spring inside the lifter - just oil. the tapping you hear is either the cam slapping the lifter or the lifter slapping the valve.
if you have lifter noise you might try adding some seafoam to the oil for a bit, then change the oil. might clean up the problem. otherwise, you can use a used lifter from another head. the lifters are hardened so don't suffer the same wear issues as other cars' lifters. my mechanic has installed used saab lifters for years without issue.
