Joe, you said earlier you couldn't do the method that uses a bolt and socket to pull the shaft, because your gearbox is in neutral and you've disabled the clutch hydraulics.
But you can still shift your tranny into gear just fine, and thus lock that shaft from turning. Don't need to worry about a clutch when the car is shut off, you can shift around thru all the gears.
And besides, you don't need to have it be in gear to work the method, either. Just thread the bolt into the shaft as far as it will go, and since the threads are clean you should be able to hand-tighten it right home, even with a free-spinning shaft. Then you hold the head of the bolt with one wrench, while running a nut down against the washers and socket with another wrench. It will exert irresistible force on that shaft and should pop it past the spring clip even if it's rusted.
Flush with the face is where it should sit all the time, with the plastic slinger installed. (I wonder if the absence of that let it get some kind of a notch or worn place in the splines, that's holding it from pulling all the way?)
If you do cave and send it to the shop, at least get the satisfaction of a good explanation from them once they fix it.
