Ever have clutch shaft not budge--What caused it?

Although I stated in my previous post that I "threw in the towel" and am going to have the car towed to an indie, I thought I would give it one more try today.
I spayed the spot with PB Blaster where the end of the shaft (spline end) sits in the front assembly that the primary chain goes around last night. Today, I took a 5-lb mini sledgehammer, and while using a pickle (ball joint remover) fork, heavy persuasion bar, and a piece of wood, I whacked the heck out of it.
Nothing.
That shaft only moves in and out enough to make the end of it flush with the assembly it sits in.
WTF???
There really is not much more force I can apply to this thing. There's no way it could be rusted in there since it does move in and out slightly (1").
I don't quite understand what is going wrong. I have released the pressure of the pp by using spark plug wire in the fingers. The slave cylinder popped all the way out (because I pressed on the clutch pedal while the plug wire was inserted), and has since been leaking clutch fluid. There is nothing else for me to do to get this shaft out.
Has anyone been down this road before, and if so, what was the reason?
Joe
