'94 and earlier conv. vs. '95 and later

I am considering buying a Saab convertible as a 3rd car. Looking here on Saabnet and elsewhere, I've seen a few very low mileage '94 and earlier cars (12,000 - 60,000 miles) and numerous later cars with similar miles.
I prefer the look of the older cars... probably for the same reasons that I preferred the look and feel of my '97 9000CSE to the '01 9-5 I owned and the '04 9-5 that I currently drive.
I have not driven either generation car as yet. I can easily drive a '95 and later car at a local dealer here in CT. However, all of the '94 and earlier cars I have found are at least 2-3 hours from here. I have been a passenger in a '99 convertible. It felt a lot like my wife's "old" '96 900S sedan, though I was somewhat surprised by the amount of body flex I felt in the A-pillars when the driver went over bumps.
How do the two generations stack up other than appearance? ... engines, transmissions, body flex etc. What do I gain or sacrifice by going with a '94 or earlier car vs. a later car?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
