...from clutch disk temporarily "sticking" in its tight-against-flywheel engaged position when pressure plate was lifted off it during shifting.
That sticking, if any, would be of the most momentary duration and it'd be snapped loose and up off the flywheel by irresistible forces. Same as the way a brake pad is pushed back and off the rotor as soon as foot pressure on pedal lets up.
I suppose on extremely rusty splines the disk might want to hang just low enough to skid along on flywheel surface and still mean some rotation of tranny input shaft. But think also, every time you step on gas or let off, while in gear (that's a lotta times), those splines are being worked back and forth against the internal splines of clutch disk center, breaking up and dispersing anything that's in there.
I vote with couch tour for that new pilot bearing as most responsible for improvement.
I think the Saab system's self adjusting nature would eliminate any problem from wear in throwout bearing.
