if you previous clutch was near the wear limit you would not be getting a complete disengagement. It takes a little time (and the more complete disengagement gives more time) to get everybody linedup or quiet before shifting and getting a smooth(er) shift.
I just did my 94 9K aero, and even though it's got syncro in reverse, I noticed better shifting into reverse, as well as less thunk on up and down shifts in forward gears.
be happy!
