Unless its surface was near perfect, and what 12 year old or older windshield is? Driving into the sunset, they light up like frosted glass from all the pits sandblasted into them over the miles. You want and deserve that new-car view if you're replacing one.
And you've got to figure the hassle of removing it from the old car the chance of busting it doing it, and the need to clean all the old sealer off the glass. Unless it was scot free and really nearby, it doesn't make sense to me.
Then, the chance of busting it hauling it to wherever it's going to be installed. If you don't know how to support glass, even trying to be careful can fail. You've got to figure on making some kind of a stand to hold it upright between dowels.
Lastly, who's going to install it? If you do it yourself, you need perfect technique and at least one helper. If you expect a glass shop to do it, they'll punish you on price for not getting new glass from them.
Glass shops are wicked competitive. I doubt you could put a used one in yourself cheaper than a new one from a shop, if you figure buying it plus your time plus the special supplies you'd need.
This doesn't hold for door glass or even rear windows. And it doesn't hold entirely for non-convertible windshields, since they can be installed pretty easily by non-pros.
