If looking at the engine from the rear of the car, it turns clockwise. So if looking at the pump, as the gears turn clockwise, the gear teeth reach a point where they are joined by that barrier of metal so any oil in the teeth get caught in there like a revolving door, then at the end of the path before the gears reconnect, the oil is squished through the outlet. And because that oil is forced out, the law of physics and hydraulics demands that the discharged oil must be replenished by oil at the input side. That's why if the engine has been worked on and oil has been drained from the oil pump, you have to prime the pump by filling it with oil from the oil filter opening. If no prime, then all it does is spin inside without any way to create the suction neccesary to draw more oil into it's interior.
