actually, the 1985 turbo was the first year of the 16V engine. I believe the 16V only came in the turbo version that year. The S maybe was the 8V, not sure, the basic model was the 8V. in 1987 the S was the 16V non turbo, and the turbo was the 16V turbo. We test drove the 1984 900 8V turbo in January of 1985. We decided to purchace the 1985 with the 16V turbo.
As many of you know, the head from the 1985 is valued as the cams opened the intake valves in a staggered fashion. My buddy the Saab Master always knew it was the fastest configuration.
in 1987, after my wife's 924 (900 four door turbo) was totaled we could not get a direct replacement. no more 900T 4Doors were *imported* as the 9000 was available. If you wanted a four door turbo Saab said get the 9K. We wanted a 4 door turbo with a *trunk*, just like before. NA (not available). so we got a 900 four door S model. was exactly like the 85 four door turbo, without the turbo. Same wheels, seats, interior, color, except it did have the new bumpers.
We had two of the 1985 924's (900 4 door turbo and both 5 speed too) and they were great!
