vvack, man I have never seen a companion flange cup broken off of it's shaft. If one companion flange was so broken you would have no drive in any gear. At that point I don't see how the other one could also break. The steel shell that wraps the cup of the companion flange will often come loose and rotate freely a little while the shaft stays still. Could that be what you are noticing? this is usually not a serious problem because there is an o'ring between the stamped steel shell and the iron cup. Some guys use a punch and hammer to stop the shell from rotating on the cup.
Anyway, to remove the speedo cable just unscrew the knurled ring with pliers and lift the cable away from the speedo driver. You don't need to remove the speedo driver from the companion flange housing to remove the housing from the main case. The speedo driver just pushes into the housing and is secured by the little steel bracket that's held under the long 'housing to case' bolt. Good luck.
