and, some of this may have been mentioned already...
I purchased the replacement left and right side rebuild half shafts for my wife's 1987 900S. it has over 350,000 on it. While some have said it is better to purchase the parts and do it yourself (the CV joint if needed, the boots which were needed etc) I just did the rebuilt. The cost of the boots, inners and outers, was close enough that I could buy the rebuilt total units and not have to fool around with removing the CV joint to get the boots off/on and also got to avoid most of the dirty work.
basically remove the wheel, block the upper A arm, remove the nut from the splined end of the wheel, remove the two bolts from the bottom A arm, and pul it toward you and then towards the rear of the car. You can then remove the entire axle. You should remove the clamp on the inner boot and peel the boot back first. Replace with the new and rebolt.
MAKE SURE YOU REALLY REALLY TIGHTEN the axle nut.
Now after saying all of that... You could do the ball joints **before** you put the new axle in (with the old one out...), it's just purchase the ball joints and whack them (as other post stated) to get them out of the knuckle and about another 30-45 minutes total.
And, if you are doing both the upper and the lower ball joints (it's just time and purchasing two more ball joints) **while you have it off** to do that, turn the bearing inside the knuckle. it should be very tight, very hard to turn, but smooth. if it is easy to turn, or you can feel roughness while turning... it's a gonner. So you order up the wheel bearings, and take the knuckles (spindles) to a Saab shop and have them press the new bearings in...
Lastly, check your rotors and pads while in there. Again, in for a penny in for a pound. If you end up doing all of this you will be good to go for another 100,000 miles...
