FWIW, my understanding is that there's enough potential for part-to-part sliding action in the outer CV joints that a moly-based grease is essential out there. I usually use the Meistersatz stuff that comes with outer CV boots. I replaced 3 of them and packed the joints a couple of weekends ago.
A few things that have always helped me when repacking the outers are using some heavy-duty needle-nose pliers to open up the circlip. The snap ring pliers you get from most car parts chains are too wimpy to work well with the circlips on the outer CVs.
A vise is a really handy thing to have. But, if you're adventurous enough to do it with the axle in the car, a hefty vise-grips, clamped on the axle so it rests behind the shock absorber, will hold the axle steady when you jerk the outer CV off the axle like CMyles described in his great writeup.
As far as the tripod joint goes, there have been a few instances reported on the board where the inner joint was dry of grease - they filled it with grease, worked it into the tripod, and smooth acceleration returned. Depending on the amount of wear in the tripod joint and inner driver, this might work for you - no guarantee that it will, though.
