Obviously, when you unclamp the hose, coolant will spill out. The best way to avoid this is to drain some of the coolant down, by using the drain on the radiator. That can be a little tricky - it is straightforward, until the drain sticks, you force it, and then it's broken. So be careful.
As mentioned, ONLY do this when the system is cold.
After refilling, you MUST bleed the cooling system. A necessity on a 900. There is a bleed nipple next to the thermostat housing. See archives on bleeding the cooling system (different than bleeding the brakes).
When was the thermostat replaced last? If you've got the cooling system open, might as well replace it. Thermostats should be replaced every 2-3 years - it's a moving part and it wears out.
