If you can find the "nipple" at the thermostat, then to drain out enough of the coolant use this procedure.
Get about a 3 - 4 foot section of rubber hose that will fit over the nipple. I have used old vacuum hose and it worked fine.
Put a half gallon container (transparent milk works great) on the ground, and place the hose into the container. Open the nipple enough turns to get fluid to flow -- use two wrenches -- turn on the engine. Coolant should start to flow into the container, so you can return it to the expansion tank later without losing any.
Once the container is full, turn off the car -- there should be enough coolant removed to take off any of the upper hoses. I would do this with the engine cold.
Close the nipple, fix your hoses, and pour in the captured coolant to the expansion tank. Then, when you want to bleed the system, just put the hose into the expansion tank, reopen the nipple, start the engine, and let the coolant run into the expansion tank. Close the nipple, reinstall the cap, and check for leaks after the coolant system builds some pressure.
I do it this way to prevent spilling coolant from the drain on the radiator -- but only for small repairs on the upper part of the cooling system.
