Hi Lou, I am somewhat mechanically inclined, what I lack in experience I can make up by careful reading of the repair manual, this board, and sites like twin Saabs. I have tackled some (to me) daunting repairs that have been successful. I have two 89's, I use them both as daily drivers for my commute to work, stores, and cruising around. One question to ask yourself would be do you have to rely on just one old Saab for all of your transportation needs; I don't so I always have plenty of time to do the work. These are old cars most with high miles, so it is very likely that you will have repairs to do. How many and how expensive is too variable to even make a guess at. Shop carefully, select a good one, and take your chances! It is nice to have a good independent mechanic as a backup (I don't), and if you have all your work done by an indie, expect to eventually pay probably more than the value of the car over the next few months or years. I would be most confortable with a combination of my own work and a good indie for those things I feel less competent doing - but I have to admit jumping in and tackling something complex is a confidence builder. I have owned Saabs since 1973, only one of them new. In the early days I did all the work myself out of necessity, then I went through a period of letting my indie do all the work, now I do all the work myself as a hobby and somewhat out of necessity because a good indie is no longer available. Hope this long story helps.
