There are a few schools of thought for removing the tie rod ends.

A few years ago, I got a press, similar to the tool shown in the manual, for $15 or so from JC Whitney. I mistakenly thought that it would work on ball joints - no such luck.

Before that, I used a BFH to not-so-gently rap straight up on the end of the threaded portion of the tie rod end after I removed the nut. Before I put it back on (I did this because I had to replace the steering knuckle), I had to use a grinding wheel to clean up the buggered threads.

If you're stuck in a place where you have to use a pickle fork, aim it towards the steering knuckle when you hammer on it, instead of towards the rack. This will make the ball joints and A-arm bushings absorb the force of the blow instead of the rack. That's still not a good thing but, for the most part, they're easier to install than a rack.

Before you remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle, be sure to loosen the locknut and verify that the inner tie rod end turns freely in the outer tie rod end. Loosening them is a PITA with the tie rod flopping about.
