...if you have one, that is. Reason not to use is it always cuts up the rubber boot, but if you're replacing then who cares? The next best thing is a big hammer, over a pound if you have one, on the forged eye of steering knuckle that the taper part fits into. They say swing sideways so shock isn't straight up tie rod into rack so nothing in there gets crazed by the blow. Shock wave pops the taper fit apart, can't possibly harm or deform that forging.
Hammer is easier than pickle fork, seems crude but harm is theoretical in my belief.
And follow the excellent advice to remove the nut on taper shaft first, but reattach it finger loose by just a couple threads so tie rod doesn't drop clean out. And to crack the locknut on the tie rod first. My advice, crack it, but then bring it back just TO the tie rod end and leave it undisturbed as a marker where to screw your new one on to.
But go ahead and buy the extracting tool if you want. Someplace someday you might need it.
