John,

I bought my daughter an 89' SAAB 900 Turbo, manual shift, as her first car. It had over 128,000 on it when we bought it and the odometer quit at 148,000 but she's now in her junior year of college and still rolling. It was a hoot teaching her how to drive the manual shift, but she got the hang of it right away and now is proud to be one of the few in her group of pals (male or female) who can drive a car with a clutch. She also discoverd this is an easy solution to the perennial problem at college when the room mate says "can I borrow your car?"

I second all of the other expert comments about certain maintanence issues. We've done a tranny and replaced the CV joints and put a muffler on. The head liner sags a bit and the AC doesn't work. But it hauls all her stuff back and forth from college in one trip with room for a passenger, has her favorite tunes on board and a few great decals and bumper stickers that tell the world who they are driving by when they pass her. The paint job's a little faded but that just gave me one more chace to impress her with Dad's skill and knowledge when I introduced her to the wonder that is rubbing compound. Wow! What a finish.

But I never felt better about the decision in selecting this older 900 than when we read her year book entry from her senior year in high school. Each student filled out basic info, i.e. college, intended major etc., and then also answered a few questions, two of which were "what do you drive now" and "what is your dream car." Alex wrote "1989 SAAB 900 turbo" and "1989 SAAB 900 turbo."

Someone once said happiness isn't having what you want but wanting what you have. Alex is a pretty happy kid and I like to think the SAAB had something to do with that.

Go for it.
