You can't get a safer car to put your child in,but, beware! Make sure she has a cell phonefor the inevitable "Dad, my car broke down" call.Usually from minor things that were not brought to your attention earlier. Women tend to ignore minor car problems until they manifest into greater problems. I bought a 93 900S convertible for my daughter, changed a headgasket, put a new top on it, then turned it over to her.
First breakdown was from a loose alternator ground wire. She never told me that the battery light was occasionally flashing. I put in a used alternator (I should have changed the brushes in it first. Second time, the battery was dead, from the bad brushes in the alternator. Third time was after she was told not to take the car because it was going to die (from the alternator) and took it out anyway. The last time, the auto trans wasn't shifting, and the car was 90 miles away. Turns out the trans was shot, AND the engine had developed a knock.
I happened to have a spare engine & manual trans in my garage, so it is now being converted (it is a convertible, after all). This time the engine is getting all new seals, hoses, water pump, alternator, crank pulley, and belts, eliminating any possible little thing that can go wrong for thousands of miles. The trans is being rebuilt, all new seals & clutch, and bearings. Also throw in a bad ball joint I found will taking the engine out.
Other than that, the car handles like a dream on the highway (better than lots of new cars), is great in the snow, relatively easy & inexpensive to fix (with the help of this board & sponsors) and my daughter should enjoy many more miles of care-free driving in the near future.
I would suggest having an independent mechanic look it over, especially the transmission, and replace any small items NOW before you turn her loose with it. There are links at the bottom of the page for indy mechanics in your area.
