Whoa, nellie!
Fine, yeah, okay, but electrical problems??? What electrical problems? All you have to do is reterminate the ground for convertible, 2- and 4-door tail lights and replace a defroster relay every eight years and update the engine harness on '85s. What electrical problems?
That and the only time we've had a head gasket go (on the '88 8 valve) was because we managed to repeatedly overheat it. The other cars ('85 8 valve, '90 16 valve, '92 16 valve convertible) have been fine, with only 325,000 miles across the four of them. Plus, if you read about Peter Gilbert, I think he replaced his twice in a million miles. I get in and twist the key and the car starts. If there's snow on the ground, you either drive conservatively like everyone else with nothing to worry about or you have (FOUR!) snow tires and have a little fun drag-racing (and often beating) four-wheel drive trucks. Having to deal with the occasional headliner is well worth it. Last time we checked, doing all the regular maintenance on our cars, here's how long things last:
Clutch: 180k
Master cylinder: 175k
Brake pads: 45k
Tires: depends on the tread compound (3 winters and the next summer on the snows) and how many corners are in the way
Front bushings: 200k
Front shocks: 135-150k
Rear shocks: 175k
Ball joints: 120k
Wheel bearings: 210k (so far)
Fuel pump: 120k or so
Fuel pressure regulator (16 valve): 150k
Fuel distributor (8 valve): 120k
Timing chain: 210k (so far)
Slushamatic: 157k (POS)
Heater valve: 175k
Cylinder head: 210k so far, maybe I'll adjust those 8-valve shims one of these days...
Body, in New York's heavily-salted winters: twice as long as I'd expected
A gallon of gasoline: 28-31 miles, depending on the weather (8 valve moreso)
Compare that to any other car from that era this side of a Me-Be, I dare you. Maybe a 5-series Bimmer that costs twice as much (to insure, maintain, and feed) or something Japanese that won't protect you in an accident. If you remember, Rubarus used to have severe rust issues.
