Well, I've had the "fever" since '96 when I bought a used base unit 82 900 n/a. It had 175K miles on the odo, had no AC and the paint finish was atrocious. What got me to buy it for near $1500 was how it felt sitting in the seat, then starting it up, then the ride during the test drive, notably the "dutiful" pedal response, but mostly the steering wheel response. Before then I'd never driven a Saab, but I have driven in lots of other cars, both foreign and domestic. No other car gave me such an immediate reaction of what I call pragmatic comfort. With a fun cherry on top. Then when I popped the hood and took a look at that large, strangely reversed but simple 8 valve engine, all the impulses to buy it fell into place. I figured if it lasted that long, I would make sure it ran much longer. It ran without a hitch until '99 when everything seemed to hit the wall at once - wheel bearings, fuel pump, tranny whine. While hunting for parts at a local indie shop, I spotted another 82 sitting in the lot being sold for a song. It was the roll-out APC edition, fully loaded with "extras," including AC which I had by then convinced myself was necessary for SoCal driving. It was badly in need of an overhaul, including needing a new front bumper, grill and hood courtesy of a slight bang-up no doubt caused by the suspect brakes. But it started easily and the tranny felt smooth. Right then and there I decided to buy it and join both cars into one by transplanting all the good parts from the original 82 over to the "new" one, including replacing the entire interior, rebuilding the front end. That was just the beginning. I've continued to detail, replace, upgrade and refurbish just about every part of the car. It now has parts on it from 1980 to 1994. I honestly don't know when it will end for me.
