Brakes disappear / come back

I own a 1885 mint condition SAAB 900. Two days ago, as I pulled off a freeway, the brakes went down almost to the floor. (Fortunately this didn't happen in stoplight-traffic.) I was able to stop. I checked the brake fluid (fine, maybe a tiny amount gone, perhaps a half-shotglass full). (I had other uses for a shotglass at that point.) I looked under the car for drips from leaks (none). I got back in the car - brake pedal still went w-a-y down. I drove to where I had been going, about a mile.... minimal brakes. I was parked there for about 20 minutes. After that I got in- the brakes were fine. I drove to my mechanic's.... he test drove the car, hard, and the brakes were fine. I told him to flush and refill the brake lines today. The car has done this once before, when my far-ex-girlfriend owned it in 1989 or so (brakes went away, came back perfect a short time later). The only thing I can guess - I was test driving a Jeep, maybe she was jealous? (I am NOT replacing her, just adding to the fleet!)
