...The coolant gets inot the block because of high cylinder pressure blowing the gasket into the timing chain area. That is many hundreds of PSI of pressure. the 10-20 PSI of coolant pressure is really minimal.
I would do 2 quick and easy and cheap tests:
1) Compression test, as another member mentioned
2) Pull the valve cover and see if the gasket is is being pushed into the timing chain area. If you see 'paper' sticking out where a straight shear metal surface should be, you have an answer.
