i found the lower heater hose can rub on the alternator and after a good amount of time the vibration of the alternator can rub a hole in the lower heater hose, the mechanic may have saw this and with the hose under pressure the burst would probably happen soon
with your finger feel the back side of the lower heater hose down around the area of where it crosses over the alternator.
if there is a substantial div-it or gash replace the hose immediately
if driving the car and the hose lets go not only will the coolant be lost the alternator can get fried in the processes.
there is one more hose to check, now this is going to be kinda hard to check, however its the lower radiator hose, as it travels up the side of the motor there is a protruding mold on the block that can rub the lower radiator hose and again can rub a hole into the hose as the car is driven
its hard to feel the back side all the way up to the water pump but right under the intake manifold is the area the lower radiator can be damaged
feeling the back side of the hose to that point should be sufficient in finding if it has been eaten in to.
again if the mechanic found this unscrewing the radiator cap would keep the system from building pressure and keep the hose from bursting.
my car had the lower radiator hose gash, and when i was replacing it is when i found the lower heater hose.
the alternator ate a hole so deep the rubber that was left on the heater hose was paper thin.
