If you drive hard and do a quick down shift and miss the right gear and throw it into first, you can get a "valve float" which would make the pistons hit the valves.

I don't think you can get the timing chain to ship by poor shifting.

How much did they charge for the engine work?
Did they provide the used engine?
What warranty did they give you on the used engine, if any?

A used engine is a used engine, I would be hesitant to give any warranty without knowing the engine and if so, only give 3 month on the engine but not the labor. Junkyards usually give you 3 month on the engine but not on labor so someone would have to pick up the labor again even though the engine might be free.

Why didn't they install a new engine and gave you the standard 12 month/12,000 mile?
Could it be they tried to save you money by installing a used engine?
