No criticism taken. Had I been able to remove the shaft, I would have tacked the pilot bearing, but I didn't want to fool with removing the radiator and I just wanted to put the car back together.
Foolishly, I told my wife it was a 3-4 hour job.
Perhaps my slave cylinder was defective (the clutch plate was worn), but I couldn't deflect the pressure plate enough to get more than a coat hanger between fingers and the tabs. Even when I tried prying, I found that the wire I got under on one side would come out while I was working on the other side.
I definitely had tunnel vision until I thought that since I was replacing the PP, just cut the fingers. The high speed rotary cutter made short work of the fingers. I actually didn't have to cut them all the way, just score and bend.
Changing the clutch was definitely easier than most cars.
Also, this board was (and continues to be) an invaluable source of good info.
thanks all
