Not sure what the reasons are, but speaking from experience here, KYBs are crap. I put them on my much loved and sadly departed 85 SPG (b/c they were a good price), they lasted about a year before getting noticeably worse over bumps. WHen I yanked them, they had well, just worn out.
Also - I just replaced the original shocks on my 89 SPG (145K) with the Boge/Sachs shocks from Eeuroparts. Suspension is stock otherwise. Literally transformed the handling of the car, feels like a new SPG. This is in contrast to my 90 SPG that's riding on old (possibily orig.) shocks... definitely a rougher/bouncier/less precise ride than the 89.
So-- for your SPG... I'd skip the KYBs, the price increase to get the sachs/boge isn't that much... If you want to go stiffer, Bilsteins work too, I put them on the 85 SPG with a saab roadholding kit (ie later style SPG lowering springs) after taking off the KYBs, that car handled like on rails. Stiff tho...
