Thanks for your thoughts. It's been over a year now but as I recall the car was running poorly when started after it had been sitting for a while. (first start in the morning for example). The engine would smooth out in about 30 seconds and then run fine. My research/troubleshooting led me to believe that the AMM was a likely culprit. The rebuilt AMM had to be defective, however, since the engine would BARELY RUN at all when I installed it. Further research showed that the company that did the rebuild was no longer in business. This implied that Jim couldn't even return it for a credit... Well, the problem with the car turned out to be a leaky check valve at the fuel pump: there was no fuel at the engine at startup because it was leaking past the check valve back into the tank.
After the pump ran for a bit the problem would disappear. I honestly though the AMM was at fault and not once did I consider purchasing it for "test purposes". I can understand how there can be a no-return policy on electrical items but then again don't I deserve a working unit when I pay for one? His policy of calling me a liar and turning into a flaming you-know-what on the phone was totally unprofessional, though. I've been doing fine with parts for my Saabs from other sources and FWIW if I ever need (or think I need) anothe AMM I'm going for a brand new Bosch.
