It sounds to me like the switched power isn't working. Saab wiring is pretty simple, and pretty standard. The three wires you need to make the stereo work are the Grey wire (battery power), the Red wire (the switched power), and the Black wire (ground). Once you've got those connected to the head unit, you should have a fully functioning stereo - although your sound and antenna won't work yet.
Get to this stage, then see about connecting up the rest of the components. From your post, it sounds to me like it may be something as simple as a blown fuse for the switched power. Get a multimeter out, and connect it up to the Red and Black wires, turn the ignition to Run, and see what you've got.
Keep in mind what Zaab said - your '92 has an auxiliary amplifier under the rear seat. The new Sony head unit will not drive it. You'll need to run new speaker wire from the dashboard to each of the rear speakers. Or, if you're lazy, just run them to the amplifier, cut the speaker connector (square one) off, and splice the new speaker wire to the existing "last mile" runs.
