MS, thanks for the info.
The leak is on the other side of the block from the thermostat (under ignition housing, top corner of exhaust manifold), so I wouldn't have made that connection that it could be from the thermostat.
The raising temperature thing might have been gradual, I'm not sure. It has happened since I bought the car last February, but since I just commute 3 miles, I haven't worried about it much yet. (the broken headlights, bent hood, and failing clutch slave were more urgent). I bought it after it had been in a front-end accident. The entire upright holding the radiator was bent backwards an inch or so, it's possible the radiator was damaged. When I replaced the uprights though, the radiator looked okay from the outside, so I just put it back in.
I haven't thought a pump issue simply because nothing is leaking back there, the front of the block (firewall side) is clean, as best as I can tell.
