Today was the third occurence of a no-start condition that first appeared about four weeks ago. My 87 turbo will not start after sitting overnight. I've gone down one of the lists in the Bentley manual but I'm confused about the results.

The first time with no starting, I checked for spark and fuel pump and both of these were operational. Pulling the fuel pump relay out and poking around the socket for loose connections didn't provide much but the car did start finally after some gentle prodding (squinting, really).

I started paying more attention to the click sounds coming from the fuel-pump relay when I moved the key to “on” and “start.” I started thinking that my fuel pump relay was failing, but I had no hard evidence.

The second time of no starting, I bypassed the fuel pump relay at the fuse box (jumping 27 to 30 as described in Bentley). So the pump is humming away and I expect the car to fire right up, but this didn't solve the problem. A few minutes of gentle starting attempts wasn't producing anything so I disconnected the jumper and with another quick start attempt the car came to life. I couldn't detect where the problem was coming from and I knew I was driving with an intermittent problem.

I photocopied a page or two from the Bentley and had the book available in the car with my voltmeter and some jumper wires, ready for action whenever the problem hit again.

This morning the car refuses to start. Bypassing the fuel pump relay doesn't get the car started (the pump is hissing away so I'm guessing it's okay) and I'm not hearing the usual 'clicks' coming from the pump and system relay area.

I started down the Bentley list for testing the system relay:
1- The AMM and LH control unit are disconnected.
2- I have ground at the pin 11 connector.
3- With pin 21 grounded, I do NOT have voltage at pin 9 or at pin 2 at the AMM - this indicates a problem.
4- I have voltage at 30 and 86 on the system relay socket. I also have continuity between 87 on the relay socket and 86 on the fuel pump relay socket as a check for the over-pressure switch.

So these results suggest that the system relay is bad. I thought swapping the pump relay with the system relay might provide some info (they're identical) but it's still no start (even with the pump bypass connected).

Does this mean I may have two bad relays (pump and system)? My tach needle is bouncing slightly when I try and start the car. I'm assuming this shows my hall sensor is okay.

Is there a way to bypass the system relay similar to how I can bypass the pump relay?

Any suggestions? Anything appreciated.
