Well, the first thing i would do is peel back the boots on both sides and see if there is any grease in there. This should be easy if they have used a standard hose clamp (rather than a crimped ring). I can't imagine that they didn't properly pack them with grease but i suppose anything is possible. As others have indicated lack of grease is about the only thing that could have resulted in such rapid failure.
