Well, let's see here, I hardly ever drive my cars hard, but my '88 four-door at 214k is still on her originals. This includes a repack at 157k when I did the transmission swap. The boots are pretty darned tired so I'm going to replace them in the spring when I put my convertible on the road. I guess it's because they deserve it.
Huge hints: I always cover the passenger side inner driver boot with plastic wrap when draining the coolant from the engine. It takes a minute and costs four cents, why not?
The story for the outers is similar- as soon as we noticed small cracks developing in the boots at around 120k we changed the boots and repacked the joints. No failures yet, knock on wood. Typing this will probably kill at least three of them.
At the transmission operation, I ended up putting plenty of new grease in each side. The auto parts chain tried giving me a teensy little container of grease when I asked for it, and I bought three of them and used it all.
Things like these make me talk to myself. In particular, something about Saab having 35 years to get the design right before my car was built.
