it sounds like you have the bypass that won't give you water to the heater when the temperature gets too hot. I'd say you either have a bad thermostat or a radiator that isn't up to the job. Change the thermostat A(about a 15 minute job if you read the bentley) and if the symptoms don't change then it's a radiator. Many take the "bypass" feature for the heater out. go to http://www.eEuroparts.com and look for the heater hose for your year, then compare with an earlier year, say a 1990, to see the difference. They show the different setups in an insert but I think it's easier to look at the earlier year without the iset. You may want to consider swapping over. It does give the advantage of always being able to get heat.
